How to Install PRTG and Configure Contacts for Ping Alerts

Introduction
PRTG Network Monitor is a powerful and user-friendly tool for monitoring IT infrastructure. This guide will walk you through installing PRTG and configuring contacts for ping alerts.


Step 1: Download PRTG

  1. Go to the Paessler website.

  2. Click Download and get the PRTG installer for your operating system.


Step 2: Install PRTG

  1. Open the downloaded installer file.

  2. Accept the license agreement to continue.

  3. Enter an email address.

  4. Choose Express.

  5. Follow the prompts to configure the server and set an admin password.

  6. Complete the installation. The PRTG web interface will open automatically.


Step 3: Initial Configuration

  1. Log in using the admin credentials you set during installation.

    1. User: prtgadmin and Pass: prtgadmin

  2. Let PRTG scan your network automatically to find devices.

  3. Click Skip Introduction


Step 4: Configure Contacts for Alerts

  1. click the Root Group → Under Notification Triggers, the Defaults should be good.

    1. Change the 600 to 60.

  2. Click @> Email and push notification to admin (default is the email entered in the setup)

    1. Scroll down until you get to Send Email

      1. Add additional email addresses here in the Send to Email Address

 


Step 5: Test Alerts

  1. Simulate a Ping Failure:

    • Temporarily disable a monitored device or block its ping responses.

      • this can be done by right-clicking the ping sensor and selecting simulate system error.

        • once the email is confirmed you can choose resume.
