Overview

Q&A on Gift Certificate security [internal use only]

Q1 How secure are e gift cards?

A1.1 - vs. plastic cards, e-gift cards are emailed direct to the recipient they are less vulnerable to being stolen and used by other people.

A1.2 - the balance of an e-gift card can also only be redeemed at POS linked to the set up made by the venue in the admin console.

Q2 What is some good ways customer can prevent fraudulent purchases i.e. using stolen credit cards?

A2.1 - Go to the back panel to limit the number of transactions per gift certificate value i.e. customers can only buy 1 X $20 voucher.

A2.2 - Avoid listing gift certificates with a value of $5 which is a common limit for fraudsters testing stolen credit cards.

A2.3 - Check in stripe for any patterns of unusual purchase behaviour i.e. overseas cards used repeatedly.

Q3 What is a purchase being fraudulent and the customer wants to suspend it/ refund?

A3.1 - If the payment is refunded via stripe, go to Bepoz to XXX to (CAN SOMEONE ADVISE) to suspend invalid gift cards from being redeemed.

A3.2 - Stripe recommends that account holders refund any payments they suspect are fraudulent as soon as possible. In the stripe dashboard, select the payment and click Refund as fraud. This refunds the payment and report it to Stripe.

Q4 How to reduce fraudulent payments?

A4.1 - Stripe’s Radar fraud prevention platform is automatically running on every customer’s account. It scans every payment against the most relevant signals and automatically blocks or flags fraudulent transactions. When a business using Stripe sees a card for the first time, there's an 80% chance that they've seen the card elsewhere on the Stripe network in the past.

Stripe reports payments as high risk when we believe they are likely to be fraudulent. Payments of this risk level are blocked by default for account holder review.

A4.1 - The venue can confirm their user’s email address (e.g., send an email to an address at that domain and require a response from it), review selling history, monitor suspicious behaviour i.e. overseas card transactions or cards used locally from overseas IP addresses.
